A little bit about me for those who don't know: I'm Mac McCormick III, KF4LMT. Although I'm a licensed amateur radio operator I consider myself more of a radio enthusiast who listens more than I transmit. I grew up listening to fire department communications because my father always had a scanner for listening to the FDs where we lived (he was in the Navy, and we moved several times). In the mid 1990s, I developed an interest in amateur radio through a friend and his father and was licensed as KF4LMT. Even though I've since upgraded from a Technician class license to a General class license, I've kept my original callsign because it's become part of my identity. I grew up on and around Navy bases, but I didn't develop an interest in Military Communications until the mid 1990s. This was the time that the internet was exploding, and I credit the use of email and the web for helping me connect with those knowledgeable in the field and helping me learn a lot in a relatively short period of time. Shortly afterwards I also developed an interest in Federal Communications and the use of the internet helped me develop my knowledge there as well.
My listening interests lie in Military Communications, Public Safety Communications, Search and Rescue Communications, Federal Communications, and Marine VHF Communications. I also dabble in Railroad Communications.
Amateur Radio-wise, I listen more than I talk. I hang out on the 442.700 repeater in Savannah and on DMR I can be found on the First Coast DMR (31121) and Kingsland Local (311307) talkgroups on Brandmeister and the DMR-SE Cbridge and the TGIF "Scanner Junkies" (1033) tallkgroup. Until recently, I hadn't been active on HF in almost 10 years, but thanks to the POTA bunch with the Coastal Amateur Radio Society, I've recently become interested in portable HF and put together a portable HF station and have started operating from parks.
I'm sometimes introduced to those I don't know as an expert, but that makes me uncomfortable. I'm far from an expert - I just have knowledge of what's around me here in the Coastal Georgia, Lowcounty South Carolina (Beaufort/Charleston), Columbia, SC, and Jacksonville, FL areas. Beyond that, I have very little to offer.
If you're interested in listening to things in the Coastal Georgia area, I hope this blog helps you out.
