Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; September 2023

The Monthly Military Monitoring Recap consists of frequencies and callsigns that I've heard in use in Coastal Georgia and during my travels (usually around South Carolina and Florida). Special Operations, Intelligence, and real-world Combat Air Patrol information will not be posted. Gulfstream (Savannah) and Boeing (Charleston) flight test frequencies and callsigns are also included as well as US Coast Guard, non-law enforcement FedCom, and civilian medevac callsigns, N-numbers, and frequencies.

My month of September was a bit of an oxymoron when it came to scanning and monitoring; I didn't have a lot of radio time, but it turned out to be an extraordinary month. Even though I only had a couple of hours to listen to it over the week it took place, the William Tell Air-to-Air Weapons Meet was the highlight of the month. It had been nineteen years since the last William Tell and the first of the revived Meets took place at the Georgia Air National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center/Air Dominance Center at Savannah-Hilton Head IAP. Another highlight was getting to hear some of the recovery communications as the NASA/SpaceX Crew-6 crew returned to earth from the International Space Station. They splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean near Brunswick, GA and Jacksonville, FL so I was able to hear some radio traffic from NASA aircraft supporting the recovery. Other things worth noting from September are:
  • The 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade remains deployed to Europe. Based on some of their recent social media posts, it looks like they'll be returning home in the not-too-distant future.
  • The 165th AW at Savannah-Hilton Head IAP is undergoing their conversion from the C-130H to the C-130J. They no longer have any C-130Hs and should start receiving their C-130Js later this year.
  • VMFA(AW)-533 at MCAS Beaufort is undergoing their conversion from the F/A-18C/D to the F-35B. Their F/A-18s are gone and they should start receiving their F-35Bs near the end of this year. VMFA-312 didn't seem to fly much this month and it makes me wonder if they're about to follow VMFA(AW)-533 into transitioning to the F-35.
  • Now that the P-3 training program has wound down, VP-30, the P-8A Fleet Replacement Squadron at NAS Jacksonville, has stopped using NAVY LL 8## and are now using NAVY LL ##.
  • VP-5 and VP-8 are currently deploying, and VP-26 has begun returning to NAS Jacksonville from their deployment.
  • The 125th FW at Jacksonville IAP has begun their conversion from the F-15C to the F-35A. It may just be me, but it seems like their op tempo has slowed over recent months as result. They're supposed to start receiving their new aircraft next year.
  • The only Eurocopter EC135 in use by AirEvac (that I know of) changed its N-number this month from N38RX to N883AE. It's based out of Dublin, GA as AirEvac 176.
I'm a bit too far away from Fort Stewart, so I don't often hear radio traffic from the 3rd ID's 1st and 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Teams on low band, VHF, or UHF, but I sometimes hear them on the US Army TRS. I've decided, starting with this month's recap, that I'm going to start including callsigns I hear 3rd ID units using on the system in the recap.
