I took a couple of extra days off along with the Thanksgiving holiday and as part of those days off, I took an overnight road trip to Columbia, SC. I left Savannah on Monday afternoon, stopped in Swansea, SC for dinner, then continued to a hotel in Cayce, SC to stay the night. On Tuesday morning, I visited the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia then headed back to Savannah just after lunchtime. This Columbia road trip was a bit different because I used US-321 for the northbound trip but used I-26 and I-95 to return to Savannah due to the multiple work zones I encountered on 321 on Monday afternoon.
Monday afternoon/evening was a disappointment radio-wise; I heard very little on the 2 Meter and 70 cm ham bands on the way up and once I got to the Columbia area, there wasn't any of the SC ARNG AH-64 or North Field C-17 traffic I was expecting to hear. I did, however, hear some 79th FS F-16 activity in the Bulldog MOA on the way up. Tuesday was much better, with activity from 169th FW and 20th FW F-16s, MCAS Beaufort F/A-18s and F-35s, ATAC Hawker Hunters, and some aerial refueling activity. On the public safety side of things, the Palmetto 800 system was its usual busy self in the Columbia area. CSX and Norfolk Southern frequencies were also active on both days. I listened to the Riverbanks Zoo NXDN TRS some more on this trip, but really didn't discover anything new about it.

Tuesday morning was a bit chilly, but it turned out to be a wonderful day to visit the zoo. The early morning clouds cleared, the sun came out, and things warmed out a bit. On my first lap around the zoo, the Rhinos and Gorillas weren't out, but on subsequent laps both had been released onto their habitats and some of the Gorillas put on quite the show by climbing trees.
