The Monthly Military Monitoring Recap consists of frequencies and callsigns that I've heard in use in Coastal Georgia and during my travels (usually around South Carolina and Florida). Special Operations, Intelligence, and real-world Combat Air Patrol information will not be posted. Gulfstream (Savannah) and Boeing (Charleston) flight test frequencies and callsigns are also included as well as US Coast Guard, non-law enforcement FedCom, and civilian medevac callsigns, N-numbers, and frequencies.
May 2024 was a month in which I didn't have as much radio time as I would have liked, but the time I did have made for yet another outstanding month of monitoring. The month began with a USMC Amphibious Readiness Group working in the area and that was closely followed by another exercise and more visiting units at the Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center/Air Dominance Center. The month also began with some indication that VMFA-533 at MCAS Beaufort may be back in the air. Finally, a new AirEvac Base was identified in Coastal Georgia.
- The USS Wasp (LHD-1)/24th MEU ARG was operating in the Atlantic Ocean off the Georgia Coast at the beginning of the month. I didn't have a lot of time to listen to them but I did catch some of their air defense training activity.
- The Savannah CRTC/ADC and the offshore training areas were busy for two weeks while the CRTC/ADC hosted Sentry Savannah 2024. The 71st FS, 7th FTS, 100th FS, 157th FS, and 159th FS participated along with supporting tankers.
- During the first days of the month, I heard F-35Bs working out of MCAS Beaufort using the callsign HAWK, but with VMFAT-501 air-to-air frequencies. I never heard any flights using HAWK throughout the rest of the month, but it could be an indicator that VMFA-533 is finally back in the air training with VMFAT-501.
- May featured the rare catch of a B-52 in the skies over south Georgia as one did some random aerial refueling with a MacDill AFB based KC-135 after it had finished refueling some C-17s in AR-207.
- Beginning in April, I started hearing AirEvac helicopters N192AE and N133AE but I was never able to identify what AirEvac base they were flying from. At the end of May, I saw an AirEvac Facebook post announcing that they had returned to Waycross as AirEvac 183. Photos on AirEvac 183's Facebook page showed N192AE and N133AE. It seems that they were using N192AE when the base first opened in April but are now using N133AE.
I didn't hear them, but it's worth reporting that MCAS Beaufort posted on social media at the end of the month that VMFT-402 "Grim Reapers" F-5Ns had arrived there. VMFT-402 will be based at MCAS Beaufort to provide aggressor flights for the F-35B and F/A-18 squadrons based at Beaufort.
