Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; October 2024

As October passed by, it didn't seem to be all the interesting of a MilCom month, but in the last few days as I looked back over the month to compile the recap, I realized it wasn't all that bad after all. One of the squadrons at MCAS Beaufort that had been inactive due to F-35 conversion began to fly again. In somewhat related news, the 125th FW at Jacksonville IAP  may have recently stood down to begin their conversion to the F-35A. A road trip to Columbia, SC gave me the opportunity to listen to things from Shaw AFB and Fort Jackson that are too far away to hear at home. There were also some nice foreign military/civil aviation catches.

Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC

I also came across some interesting World War II Military History while walking some trails at the Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge in Coastal Georgia in October; some of my readers may be interested in that, so I'll include it at the end of the recap.

  • During mid-October, VMFA-533 at MCAS Beaufort received their first F-35B and began flying  single ship flights as HAWK ##. They've been using 304.200 as their Base frequency, the same as used when they were flying F/A-18C/Ds. As they receive more F-35Bs and start flying multi-ship flights, we should be able to sort out their air-to-airs.
  • Over September and early October, some P-8 squadrons at NAS Jacksonville rotated overseas deployments. VP-10 and VP-45 returned to NAS Jacksonville while VP-16 and VP-16 departed on their deployments.
  • While compiling this month's recap, I noticed that I haven't heard any 125th FW (based at Jacksonville IAP) activity since August. It's quite possible that they have stood down for their conversion from the F-15C to the F-35A; from their website: "The 125 Fighter Wing officially enters conversion when we stand down F-15C Eagle operations, which is anticipated to happen in the fall of 2024."
  • I had a handful of nice foreign air force/civil aviation catches during October. I hadn't heard an Antonov An-124 for quite awhile and I caught one going southbound to Kennedy Space Center and the next day on its way back north. Next, I caught a Royal Netherlands Air Force A332 MRTT for the first time. I also caught Australian Air Force and Hungarian Air Force C-17s passing through the area.

Military History at Harris Neck NWR

One Saturday afternoon in October, I went out to Harris Neck NWR near Eulonia, GA and walked some its trails. Most of the trails at Harris Neck NWR are the runways, taxiways, and ramps left from when the land was the site of a World War II training airfield - Harris Neck Army Airfield. On the Historical Trail, at the end of one of the taxiways, I came across a piece of World War II Military History - a concrete and earthen shoot-in-butt. The shoot-in-butt was used to calibrate and sight in guns on the P-39 and P-40 aircraft that were used to train pilots at Harris Neck NWR. The guns would be used for practice at nearby Townsend Range, which is still used by the military for air-to-ground combat training today.  Farther down the Historical Trail are a long dormant fountain and reflecting pool, which were part of the formal gardens of Pierre Lorillard's (of the Lorillard Tobacco family) lodge in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While the property was Harris Neck NWR, Lorillard's Lodge was the base's Officers Club.
