Earlier this month I took a road trip to Charleston and my car broke down on me when I tried to return home on 7 April. On the 11th, I had to go up and pay a deposit for the work to be done; Mama rode with me, so we made a couple of sightseeing stops on the way back to Savannah. The car was ready late on the 17th, so we went back up to Charleston and picked the car up the next morning with her following me back to Savannah in her car. On these two trips, I didn't have the mobile station (with the exception of returning back to Savannah on the 18th) and I didn't take all of the usual equipment, so what I heard was a bit more limited and this post can give you an idea of what you can hear in and around Charleston if you just take one radio.

On these two trips, I monitored with a much more limited setup than I usually have with me on road trips. On the 11th and 17th I just used the Uniden SDS100 with a mag mount antenna on Mama's car while on the 18th I had the usual complement of mobile radios in my car for the trip back to Savannah. In the hotel room overnight on the 17th/18th, I used the SDS100 connected to the laptop with ProScan and a mag-mount antenna. The metal disc I usually put the mag-mount(s) on was in my radio bag in Brunswick, so I looked around the house and found a Mason Jar lid to put it on. It worked pretty good; on Thursday evening I could hear the Charleston (County), Charleston (State), Awendaw, North Charleston, Ravenel, Berkeley, and Dorchester sites of the Palmetto 800 system from the hotel in West Ashley.
With just a handheld for much of the trip, there isn't a lot to report on the MilCom/Aviation side of things (I'm not a big fan of the SDS100 on VHF/UHF Aviation AM because I don't really like its AM audio). I did get in some more listening on the Boeing DMR TRS in Charleston; this time I remembered to take note of what kind of DMR TRS it is - Capacity Plus. As far as FedCom goes, all I heard was USCG activity. There was a lot of brush fire/wildfire related radio traffic on both the South Carolina Forestry VHF repeaters and from local FDs on the Palmetto 800 system. South Carolina is in pretty much the same situation we are in Coastal Georgia; it's dry and conditions are ripe for brush fires/wildfires. On the 17th/18th, the RBC Heritage PGA Tournament was underway in Hilton Head and there was Fire/EMS related communications for it on one of the Hilton Head Fire/Rescue tac channels.

Sightseeing
We had some time to burn on the trip to pay the deposit at the shop, so on the way back to Savannah I took Mama by the North Charleston Fire Museum to see their antique fire trucks and by the Old Sheldon Church Ruins in Beaufort County. If you have an interest in public safety history, stop by the Fire Museum if you visit Charleston; they have a wonderful collection of antique fire apparatus going back to the 1800s, including an 1857 hand pumped fire engine. The Old Sheldon Church was originally the Prince William Parish Church, built between 1745 and 1753; it was burned during the Revolutionary War, rebuilt, and burned again during the Civil War. It is currently owned by the Parish Church of St Helena in Beaufort and is open to the public to visit.

Car Repair
When my car broke down, it did so right across the street from
Woodie's Auto Service on US-17 in West Ashley/Charleston. Since I was across the street from them, I checked their reviews on Google Maps, found they were very good, and decided to go them. One of their mechanics came across the street, took a look at things, determined what the problem was, and then helped me push it across the road to the shop. They ended up having the car for two weeks, but it was because clutch parts for a thirteen year old manual transmission car aren't very common and had to be ordered in. Since they had it, they also did some other work that was quite frankly overdue. Just based on the drive home from Charleston, the work was good and their customer service was outstanding, especially considering that I live two hours from them.

Food
When we went up to make a deposit for the work being done, we stopped at the
East Bay Deli on US-17 in West Ashley for lunch. For the umpteenth time, you can't go wrong with East Bay Deli. This time around, I tried their Greek Salad with Gyro Meat and it was a terrific choice.

I usually don't include meals in Savannah on Road Trip Reports, but on on the way up to Charleston on Thursday evening, we stopped at
Latin Chicks Restaurant for dinner and it deserves a mention. Mama got a Latin Bowl with Roast Pork and I chose the Roast Pork Tacos with a side salad in place of the rice and beans. Their Roast Pork is awesome; it's fall apart with the fork tender and moist, and absolutely delicious. I used the green salsa that came with the tacos as a salad dressing and it couldn't have been better.

After picking up my car from Woodie's Auto Service in Charleston on Friday, we stopped at
ACE Basin Fish Camp in Jacksonboro (in Colleton County) for lunch. It was recommended by family friends and I'm so glad we stopped - the food was terrific! Mama had their fried Creek Shrimp (basically popcorn shrimp) and she loved it. I had blackened Shrimp and Scallops with a side of green beans and it was all delicious. We also ordered some crab bites as an appetizer and they were quite good as well. I've driven by them so many times and never stopped, but they're definitely on my Lowcountry list of places to eat now.
