Coastal Georgia Christmas (Not So Much a) Road Trip Radio Report; 13/14 December 2025

I'm not taking a road trip in December as I prepare for a Space Coast Road Trip in January but over the weekend, I did travel around southeast and coastal Georgia visiting the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glennville, Fort Pulaski in Savannah, and Fort King George in Darien. I don't post a lot about local Fire/Rescue communications in the Savannah area, so I thought I'd do a blog post about the weekend's travels and what I heard during them. Perhaps it will be helpful for anyone who may be thinking about visiting the Savannah area.

Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glenville

On Saturday morning, my mother, my sister, and I drove up to the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glenville (where my father is buried) for the most important trip of the weekend: their Wreath Day Ceremony and the placing of wreaths at the Veterans' headstones. After the ceremony, we were able to let Mama place the wreath at Daddy's headstone. Military involvement in the event was provided by Effingham County High School's Air Force JRTOC; their Color Guard presented the Colors, a detail presented ceremonial wreaths for each service, and cadets passed out wreaths for families to place at their loved one's graves. I made sure that I passed on my thanks to the CMSgt commanding the Cadets before we left.

It was purely coincidental, but the Wreath Ceremony got a fly-by just before it was over... A flight of two 158th Airlift Squadron C-130Js were working at Fort Stewart and happened to turn near the Cemetery back into Fort Stewart's airspace. It may not have been planned, but it was a nice touch that luck provided!

It was the first time I've been to one of the Veterans Cemetery wreath ceremonies; it won't be the last

After the wreath ceremony, we drove into Glenville and had a delicious lunch at Sho’Nuff Smokin Good T3. They had fried chicken, ham, pulled pork, and a plethora of southern cooking vegetables. In addition to the ham and pulled pork, I had some lima beans, green beans, and squash and zucchini casserole; it was all wonderful!

Candle Lantern Tour and Fort Pulaski National Monument

On Saturday evening, I drove out to Fort Pulaski National Monument on US-80 between Savannah and Tybee Island for their annual Candle Lantern Tour. This year, the tour featured reenactors representing pre-Civil War lighthouse keepers, soldiers from the Civil War, CCC workers from the Great Depression, and World War II sailors. Additionally, there were musicians playing period Christmas music. At the bottom of each hour during the tour, there was a nighttime firing of the fort's Parrot rifle; if you've never seen a nighttime cannon firing, it's something to behold!

1721: Life of a Sailor, Living History at Fort King George

On Sunday morning, I drove down to Darien to visit Fort King George for their 1721: Life of a Sailor Living History Event. Reenactors portrayed sailors, pirates, and soldiers from the early 18th Century, demonstrating cooking, crafts, navigation, and weapons from the era. I got there early enough to catch most of a Sunday morning prayer service that consisted of period Church of England prayers, the singing of Joy to the World (written in 1719), and the playing of Amazing Grace by a piper. I enjoyed learning about 18th Century navigation, including the use lead lines, compasses, traverse boards, and chip lines. It was fascinating learning about the traverse board; I knew about lead lines and chip lines, but had never heard of a traverse board or how it was used to track direction/speed for the ship's log.

Scanning

It was a good weekend for scanning and monitoring while driving around southeast and coastal Georgia. C-130Js from the Georgia Air National Guard at Savannah-Hilton Head IAP were flying round, as were F/A-18s from VMFA-312 and F-35Bs from VMFAT-501 at MCAS Beaufort, and F-35Cs from VMFA-251 at MCAS Cherry Point. Fire Departments from most of the counties I passed through and near were active on the radio. Public Safety-wise, most departments between Savannah and Glennville and Savannah and Darien are on the SEGARRN P25 trunking system, but there are still agencies using VHF repeaters and Tattnall County uses a NXDN trunking system. Some Palmetto 800 talkgroups are included because you can easily hear the Beaufort County Palmetto 800 site from Fort Pulaski. Marine VHF frequencies for the coastal area and railroad frequencies throughout the area were active as well.
