Travelling Around Southeast Georgia - Notes From a Drive to Brooklet and Glenville and Learning Some New Southeast Georgia History; 13 April 2026

Today I spent much of the first half of the day on the road. I had to go up to Brooklet (near Statesboro in Bulloch County) to pick up a part to fix a couch and then I took Mama by the Veterans Cemetery in Glenville to visit my Father's gravesite. On the way home, I drove through Fort Stewart to see what I could see and hear. This trip took me through Nevils to Daisy on the drive from Brooklet to Glenville on Brooklet-Denmark Rd, Nevils-Denmark Rd, and Nevils-Daisy Rd; it was the first time I've been through Nevils and I ended up learning a piece of southeast Georgia History during the drive.

Candler Peanut - Nevils at the intersection of Nevils-Groveland Rd and Nevils-Denmark Rd in Nevils, GA. If I hadn't known I was in Nevils, I might have thought I was in Plains, GA.

Scanning Notes

I took the Uniden SDS100 and Whistler TRX-1 along on the drive today, with the SDS100 connected to the usual ABSCANC antenna the TRX-1 connected to a small mag-mount antenna. The trip's listening yielded a good representation of what you can hear in coastal and southeast Georgia.

Shearwood Railway

As I pulled up to the stop sign at Nevils-Denmark Rd and Nevils-Groveland Rd in Nevils, the first thing I noticed was the remnants of an old building and the second thing I noticed was a Bulloch County Historical Society historical marker. I pulled over to the side of the road and got out to read the marker; I learned that the road I'd been driving on since Denmark was built on the roadbed of a railway I'd never heard of and the remnants of the old building were what is left of a station for the railway.

What remains of the Nevils Railroad Station for the Shearwood Railway
The Shearwood Railway historical marker with more information about the railroad and station

The Railway was the Shearwood Railway, a private railroad that operated between Egypt, GA (in Effingham County) and Hagan, GA (in Evans County). The railway serviced the owners' sawmill in Brooklet, transported produce to market and fertilizer in return, and facilitated travel for area residents to the Savannah area. The Shearwood Railway declined during the Great Depression of the 1930s and eventually went out of business and the station pictured above operated as a country store until it was deserted. After the rails and equipment were sold for scrap, the railbed between Nevils and Denmark became Nevils-Denmark Rd.
