Macon and Warner Robins - Overnight Road Trip Radio Report; 9/10 June 2026

My summer vacation road trip this year was limited to an overnight road trip to Macon and Warner Robins. I left Savannah around lunchtime on Tuesday and went up to Macon to visit the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame before heading down to Warner Robins to spend the night. I spent Wednesday morning at the Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB before getting lunch in Warner Robins and heading back to Savannah. I enjoyed the trip; the weather was good with just a few sprinkles of rain on Tuesday but you could definitely tell that Summer is upon us. The only disappointment was a lack of activity in the Bulldog MOA as I drove under it on the way to Macon and Warner Robins and back home to Savannah.

Aviation/MilCom

Driving along I-16 between Savannah and Macon on a Tuesday and Wednesday, I expected to hear the Bulldog MOA over east Georgia active, but I didn't and that meant I didn't hear as much military communications as I expected. Regardless, I did hear some MCAS Beaufort activity offshore when I was closer to the coast and of course heard Robins AFB activity while in the Macon and Warner Robins area. As always, being that close to Atlanta, there was a lot of commercial aviation activity to be heard, especially on Atlanta ARTCC frequencies.

While closer to the coast, I could hear US Coast Guard activity around Savannah, but the farther inland I got, I heard less Federal Communications. While in the Savannah area, I could also hear the National Park Service repeater at Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Public Safety

The most activity I heard during this road trip was on Public Safety frequencies and radio systems. Public Safety between Savannah and Macon are on a variety of systems; with P25 trunking prevalent in the more urban areas around Savannah and Macon with analog, DMR, and NXDN more prevalent in the rural areas. While in the Savannah area, the Palmetto 800 P25 system in South Carolina can be heard; usually with activity from bordering Jasper and Beaufort Counties.

Port, Railroad, and Industry

While around Savannah, plenty of port activity can be heard on Marine VHF frequencies. In the areas around both Savannah and Macon, there is plenty of railroad activity to listen to; CSX and Norfolk Southern in Savannah and mostly Norfolk Southern in Macon. I also listened to the DMR TRS in use at the Hyundai Meta Plant next to I-16 in Bryan County as I passed by it.

Amateur Radio

I didn't hear very much amateur radio repeater activity on this trip, and no simplex/national call activity. I didn't take the portable HF station either because with the onset of Summer, it's just too hot for me to set up and operate. I'll resume portable HF operations in the Autumn when things start cooling down again.

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

The first stop on this road trip was at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon. It's an interesting museum with exhibits about the amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes who have been inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame as well as exhibits on the history of Georgia sports in general. It's mostly focused on baseball, basketball, football, and track and field, but there are also exhibits on  NASCAR, Olympic sports, and soccer.

Robins AFB Museum of Aviation

Before heading back to Savannah on Wednesday, I spent the morning at the Robins AFB Museum of Aviation. The B-17G restoration appears to be complete; there weren't any volunteers working on it and all of the ladders, drip pans, etc. that were around it on previous visits were removed. In the same hangar as the B-17G, volunteers are working on the restoration of an VB-26B and a C-47A. The C-47A is a D-Day/Operation Overlord veteran, 43-15200, that was transferred from a museum in Alaska to the Museum of Aviation. The museum is restoring it to its D-Day appearance. The VB-26B, 44-34610 is the last A-26 Invader retired from USAF service (it was retired in 1972); it was transferred from the Smithsonian to the Museum of Aviation for display. The museum's F-117 is still out back in a shelter undergoing restoration; in an adjacent shelter, it looks like there is a B-25 undergoing restoration. Also out back next to the hangar the F-117 is being restored in, are a MGM-1 Matador cruise missile and a MGM-13 Mace cruise missile that look like they are in line for restoration. I've also included photos of some of the vintage radio, communications, and electronics equipment on display at the museum.

Food and Lodging

As usual, I stayed in the Comfort Inn and Suites across GA-247/US-129 from Robins AFB; it's right down the highway from the museum, the staff is always friendly and helpful, and it's easy to get into on the way into town and to get back to I-16 on the way home. This trip was one of several times I've had them upgrade my room; even though it was just an overnight trip, it was nice to have a bit more space.

Once again, I enjoyed a delicious meal at El Mural Mexican Grill and Cantina in Warner Robins for dinner on Tuesday evening. They have delicious food and I've never had bad service there. On this visit, I tried their seafood burrito and it was excellent; it even had real rather than imitation crab meat.

For lunch on Wednesday before I headed back to Savannah, I stopped at Fincher's Barbeque in Warner Robins just up GA-247/US-129 from the museum. It was outstanding! I tried their pulled pork plate with BBQ beans and cole slaw. The pulled pork was smoky and juicy and their sauce was tangy and savory - I absolutely loved it! The beans were tasty, too with pork added to them and the slaw was simple, just like I enjoy it. They get busy really quick at lunch time, but it's a great place to have a meal while listening to airplanes coming and going from Robins AFB across the highway and trains go by on the tracks just outside.
