I've been on FMLA for three weeks, caregiving for a family member after surgery and go back to work on Monday, so I visited the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge's Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive early before it got too hot (a high of 100F has been forecast). It turned out to be a beautiful morning and I saw plenty of alligators and birds. A visit to the Savannah NWR also presents a good opportunity to listen to Savannah-Hilton Head IAP and Georgia Ports as the Refuge is just across the Savannah River from Garden City, Port Wentworth, the Airport, and the port terminal and railyards.

Even though I left home around 7:30AM to drive over the refuge, there was plenty to listen to on the radio. Throughout the drive to, around, and from the Wildlife Drive, there as a lot of public safety communications to monitor, especially on the SEGARRN system in coastal Georgia and the Palmetto 800 system in Lowcountry South Carolina. Especially while driving through Garden City and Port Wentworth on GA-21 and driving around the Wildlife Drive, there was a lot of Marine VHF and Railroad traffic from the port and associated railyards. Unfortunately, there was also a SAR being conducted by the US Coast Guard and Tybee Island FD; a boat had overturned offshore of the Tybee Island Lighthouse and one person was missing in the water. USCG asset and TIFD units were involved in the search and rescue operations.
